One of the greatest challenges in science education is being a master of middle grade content. The science knowledge required is both vast and deep. The vastness includes the range of traditional science subjects such as astronomy, biology, chemistry, Earth science, geology, physics, and space sciences. Yet to help adolescents experience science and have the foundation for later science learning, the effective middle grade teacher’s knowledge extends deeper than the enacted curriculum.
This book is the work of science education experts with an interest in middle grade education. Twenty-one authors contributed to the book’s 14 chapters. Using the NES general science exam content as a framework, chapters have been written and peer reviewed to provide the most pertinent information to current and future science teachers. The book has two goals (a) to improve science content knowledge and (b) to help individuals succeed on the NES science exam.
Each chapter includes a summary, multiple choice and open-ended assessment questions, answers to the assessments, key vocabulary, recommended internet resources, and information about the authors. At the end of the book is an extensive vocabulary list, with definitions, for all the chapters at the end of the book.

CHEMICAL REACTIONS SOMETHING NEW FROM SOMETHING OLD, CHAPTER 6. FORCES, CHAPTER 7. ENERGY, CHAPTER 8. WAVES, CHAPTER 9. CELLS THE BASIC UNITS OF LIFE, CHAPTER 10. LIVING ORGANISMS, CHAPTER 11. GENETICS CHAPTER 12. EVOLUTION AND CLASSIFICATION, CHAPTER 13. ECOLOGY HOW NATURE, CHAPTER 14. PROCESSES SHAPING THE EARTH, CHAPTER 15. THE HYDROSPHERE, CHAPTER 16. THE ATMOSPHERE, WEATHER, AND CLIMATE, and CHAPTER 17. SOLAR SYSTEM AND UNIVERSE, and VOCABULARY FOR ENTIRE BOOK.
Each chapter is broken into sections, for example, Chapter 16 contains the following sections The Ancient Atmosphere, The Atmosphere Today, Earth’s Energy Budget, Factors that Affect Weather and Regional Climate, Natural Causes of Climate Change, Human Causes of Climate Change, Climate Change Impacts on Ecosystems, Climate Change and People, and Slowing Human Produced Climate Change

Great resource with short, succinct chapters and great review questions. Helpful for test preparation and for just increasing general science knowledge.
