This is a fun, gory read very much in the style of an 80's splatterpunk movie - in fact, with the right director, this would make a spectacularly fun film. There's plenty of carnage and just enough silliness to take it over the top - I particularly liked the trio of murderous Shih Tzu werewolves.
There a a few reasons this gets 4 rather than five stars. One is the author's tendency to ladle the purple prose on thick, with sometimes corny results - snow shining with "dull brilliance" or eyes looking like black golf balls, that sort of thing. Another is that the breed pretty much attack by bashing down doors, clawing and biting like your basic garden variety werewolf. The idea of domesticated beasts turning into near-humans could have been played with a lot more, with them having dangerous traits related to their humanity. The story took a while to get going, and some of the dense backstory for some of the characters, while nicely done, slows it down and could have been trimmed in favor of more werewolf antics and grizzled old Canadians kicking ass.

I don't have any idea how many readers are interested in Lycanthropy. I am and have been since shildhood and this book by Blackmore is a wonderful story. The brutal action is mixed in with a community spinning out of control as the society of werewolves attempts to control itself.
I really enjoyed the character development, real people, a community in crisis and a social group of warewolfs attempting to keep control of its own, during a severe winter. The result of this twisted story is as predictable as a Gladiatorial event.
I couldn't put it down! What an amazing writer Mr Blackmore is!
SPOILER ALERT....
I too saw the Warning from the author at the beginning of this book about not reading it if you love dogs, or have a problem with course language. But, others' Feedback encouraged me to press on, and I'm so glad I did!
What an amazing story! Sooooooo different from any werewolf saga I've EVER read!
Now, I work with the criminally insane for a living, so there isn't any rough language I haven't heard before. I may not like it, but it isn't an issue for me.
And, I adore dogs, and any animal, really. I think that is why I love the concept of werewolves. After a hard day dealing with the worst humanity has to offer, I know that REAL monsters in this world walk on two legs....... and they blend in.
After such a day on the job, I would love nothing better than to be able to shift into to a sleek wolf and go running off into the woods & howl at the moon!
I never 'get' werewolf characters who hate being able to turn into a wolf. As long as you still have your mind, and can control your self, where's the downside? I would be rocking on it, & be out running every night!
Anyway, I digress, probably due to being sleep deprived, as I sat up all night finishing this gripping story! The characters, & the setting, are all so well developed, & the dialogue is so natural, that this story comes to life in your mind's eye. No typos either! What a treat! I could NOT put it down!
Back to the SPOILERS...... The 'dogs being hurt' part of the story IS NOT what it sounds like. It's the dogs who do the hurting, most of the time. While reading this, I looked at my own faithful dog, a mix of German Shepherd & Anatolian Shepherd. I know he would have become like the valiant 'Max' in this story, fighting to protect his mistress, regardless of what 'form' he's in. Brave & loyal 'Max' is one of my favs in this story! How I wish the author had let him survive. 'Max' could obviously handle his shape-shifting abilities, & would have become an asset to the Town, a protector, just like 'Ross' will be. 'Ross' & 'Max' would make a great team!
'Kirk', the reluctant werewolf, is my other fav in the story.
His reluctance to 'shift', even when it would help him track & fight the bad 'weres', is maddening. He waits until he has no other choice. If he had slipped off into the blizzard & 'shifted' at the beginning of the bad 'weres' rampage, going after them right then, I think he would have saved alot of lives.
But, I like flawed heros, and if he had taken care of business right away, it would have been a short book. Can't have that!
AND, What about the mystery she-wolf 'Kirk' is pining for? Is she still alive? Does 'Kirk' still have shot with her?
What about 'Ross' s' First Shift? He's the new Warden in Town, But who's going to help him settle into his new life, & role, if 'Kirk' leaves?
This story SCREAMS for a sequel, & I will be waiting & watching & hoping for one!
Mr Blackburn, if you are reading this, PLEASE write a sequel to this story! The further adventures of 'Kirk' & 'Ross'?
And maybe bring back 'Max'? He's a new 'breed' of 'were'. Who knows what he can do? Perhaps heal from a mortal wound?
Another creative read from the author of The Mountain Man series. I enjoy this author's writing style and imagination Action packed from beginning to end. I shall read the next book in the series.
A word about the author's "A Cautionary Foreward I appreciated this comment made by the author. It's refreshing to know this author cares about my comfort while reading. I love dogs and read loads of dog books. He is correct in saying bad things happen to dogs in this story. But I thought about his statement and came to the conclusion that bad things happen to humans in most horror books. So I read this without being too awfully upset by the bad things that happened to dogs. Of course being the werewolves genre, it does have a lot of blood and guts. He also forewarns about the language. I thought that was not bad at all. He's a good writer! Give him a chance.
